Sunrise Mountain, Chaparral forfeiting games after incident

The Clark County School District announced Monday that the boys basketball teams at Chaparral and Sunrise Mountain would forfeit an upcoming game following a bench-clearing incident when the teams played Thursday.

Thursday’s game also was ruled a double forfeit. Sunrise Mountain will forfeit its game today against Boulder City. Chaparral will forfeit its game against Moapa Valley this Thursday.

“We just want to send a message to the kids that we definitely can’t have that,” said Ray Mathis, executive director of athletics for the CCSD.

Mathis said both benches emptied after an altercation on the court near the end of Thursday’s game. Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association regulations call for a team that has at least three members leave the bench during an altercation to forfeit that game. And any players involved would then be ineligible to participate in the next game.

Mathis said a foul was whistled just before the buzzer sounded, and players from both teams came onto the court. Mathis said no punches were thrown.

“There was some pushing and shoving, and kids left the bench,” Mathis said. “We even had some parents come onto the playing area. The officials did a good job. They were right there to step in and get the kids back. And then the coaches came out and separated the kids. It could have been worse.”
