Tavernari, Cougars breeze past Waves

MALIBU, Calif. — Jonathan Tavernari had 17 points and 10 rebounds, Jimmer Fredette added 16 points, and Brigham Young cruised past Pepperdine 82-53 Tuesday night.

Four players scored in double figures for the Cougars (2-0), who never trailed.

Tavernari, a junior, had 10 points, including back-to-back 3-pointers in the first half, to help BYU take a 32-21 halftime lead. The Cougars scored 12 points off 11 Pepperdine turnovers in the first half.

Lee Cummard scored 13 points and Chris Miles 10 for BYU, which opened the second half on a 9-2 run and shot 60.9 percent in the final 20 minutes.

The Waves made three consecutive 3-pointers to pull as close as 46-37 with 13:23 remaining. But the Cougars responded with a 10-0 run and never let up.

Keion Bell had nine points, seven rebounds and five assists for Pepperdine (1-2), which has lost two straight games.

• Utah 79, Wisconsin-Green Bay 60 — At Salt Lake City, Luke Nevill scored 10 of his 20 points in the first 41/2 minutes of the second half to lead the Utes (1-1) to a victory in the first round of the Glenn Wilkes Classic.

The 7-foot-2-inch Nevill, who also had 13 rebounds and three blocked shots, sat out much of the first half with foul trouble. But he had no problem dominating the smaller Phoenix (0-1) after halftime as Utah used a 19-6 run in a nine-minute span to take control.

• Colorado State 85, Northern Colorado 74 — At Fort Collins, Colo., Marcus Walker scored 31 points, including a 3-pointer and a layup off a steal in the final two minutes, as the Rams (2-0) held off the Bears (0-2).

Jefferson Mason led Northern Colorado with 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Bears hurt themselves with 23 turnovers.
