Three-run homer in eighth inning sends El Paso past 51s, 4-1

Shortstop Ramiro Pena hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to lead El Paso to a 4-1 win over Las Vegas in a Pacific Coast League game Tuesday afternoon at Cashman Field.

Pena went 2-for-4 and drove in all of the Chihuahuas’ runs. Brett Wallace went 3-for-4. Wil Myers collected two hits and scored twice as he continued his rehab assignment from San Diego.

Chihuahuas right-hander Chris Smith picked up his first win of the season, allowing five hits and one run and striking out six in seven innings.

Second baseman Dilson Herrera went 2-for-4 and drove in the only run for the 51s.

Las Vegas starter Darin Gorski struck out five in six innings. Chasen Bradford gave up the home run to Pena, allowing both inherited runners to score and handing the loss to Zach Thornton.

The teams split the four-game series. The league is off Wednesday. Las Vegas hosts the Reno Aces in a four-game series beginning at 7:05 p.m. Thursday.
