Lady Rebels dealt blowout by Aztecs

The UNLV women’s basketball team got 28 points from Kelli Thompson on Sunday, but the rest of the Lady Rebels mustered just 22 in an 86-50 Mountain West loss to host San Diego State.

UNLV (10-15, 6-5), with only eight players suited up, shot 32.7 percent and was outrebounded 45-31. The first-place Aztecs (19-5, 10-1) hit 47.1 percent from the floor, including 51.4 percent in the second half (19-for-37).

Courtney Clements led four SDSU players in double figures with 18 points.

Thompson played all 40 minutes and was the lone Lady Rebel in double figures. Rejane Verin had seven points and Amie Callaway six.

UNLV made six of its first 11 shots to take an 18-14 lead, but in the final 13 minutes of the first half, the Aztecs went on a 24-5 tear, holding the Lady Rebels scoreless for a 4½-minute stretch on the way to a 38-23 halftime lead.

UNLV rallied to get within 10 points early in the second half and trailed 49-37 with 15 minutes remaining, but San Diego State put it away with runs of 16-5 and 21-4.
