Local colleges roundup: San Diego State tops UNLV baseball, 5-3

Tyler France’s tiebreaking, two-run single in the eighth inning gave San Diego State (11-11, 3-1 Mountain West) a 5-3 victory over the UNLV baseball team (16-6, 1-3) on Friday at San Diego.

Brandon Bayardi hit his second home run of the year for UNLV. Erick Fedde (3-0) allowed three runs, two earned, with five strikeouts in seven innings for the Rebels. Tyler Iodence (0-1) took the loss on the mound.

The teams play again at 2 p.m. today.

■ SOFTBALL — Amanda Oliveto got out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning to give UNLV a 5-3 victory over Texas Tech and salvage a split for the day after a 13-1, five-inning loss to Tulsa in the Rebel Classic at Eller Media Stadium.

Stefany Valentino was 3-for-5 in the two games for the Rebels (13-18), and Tayler Aleman was 2-for-5.

UNLV plays Tulsa again at 1:30 p.m. today.

■ SWIMMING — The UNLV women’s 200 medley relay team finished 19th at the NCAA championships at Indianapolis. Relay member Katelyne Herrington also placed 19th in the 100 butterfly.

Carmen Robb was 22nd in the 100 backstroke.

The meet concludes today.

■ TENNIS — The UNLV women got singles victories from Aleksandra Josifoska, Lucia Batta and Nives Pavlovic, but losing the opening doubles point doomed the Rebels to a 4-3 defeat to Marshall at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

UNLV hosts Southern Methodist at 10 a.m. today.

COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN NEVADA

■ BASEBALL — Morgan Stotts plated three runs with doubles in the seventh and ninth innings to give CSN (24-7, 12-2) a 5-4 victory over Western Nevada College (22-12, 7-7) after a 4-1 loss to start the day at Carson City.

Chad Whiteaker went 3-for-5 and scored two runs, and Cory Welch homered for CSN.

The teams play another doubleheader at noon today.

■ SOFTBALL — CSN (20-17, 13-13) was swept by Snow College 4-1 and 4-3 in a doubleheader at Ephraim, Utah.
