The way the scores were coming in, someone needed to double-check that Southern Highlands Golf Club was indeed UNLV’s home course. Fortunately, Nicholas Maruri was there to remind everyone the Rebels weren’t strangers on their own turf.
UNLV turned in its strongest offensive performance of the season Sunday against UNR, finishing with a season-high 14 hits.
Dwaine Knight was willing to take a bold step and move off the traditional dates of UNLV’s annual men’s home golf tournament from the weekend to the beginning of the week.
Entering Saturday’s game against UNR, the running joke around UNLV’s clubhouse was that right-hander Kenny Oakley would go winless this season, but the team would still win every game in which he pitched.
UNLV found itself in prime position to snap a three-game losing streak with pitcher D.J. Myers cruising on the mound early and the team leading UNR 4-1 after six innings.
We are coming off a pretty tough weekend. Obviously you never want to go 0-and-3 against any team, but that was the case against Fresno State last week. But that’s the game and sometimes those baseball gods aren’t on your side.
