UNLV men’s swimming rumbles to seventh straight MWC crown

The UNLV men’s swimming and diving team won the Mountain West Conference Championships for the seventh straight year on Saturday, while the women’s team took fourth at the meet in Oklahoma City.

The men’s team finished with 770.6 points, well ahead of second-place Brigham Young (672).

UNLV got final-day wins from Kier Maitland (1,650-yard freestyle), Cody Roberts (100 freestyle), Andrew Morrell (200 breaststroke) and the 400 freestyle relay team of Calan Eldridge, Roberts, Kyle Virva and David Seiler.

UNLV also claimed the top conference honors, with Roberts named MWC Swimmer of the Year and Jim Reitz named MWC Coach of the Year.

For the UNLV women, the 400 freestyle relay team of Orsolya Tompa, Rachel Dixon, Friderika Szel and Jessica Heim took second in a school-record time of 3 minutes, 19.75 seconds. Marley Prothero set a school record of 2:13.50 while taking fourth in the 200 breaststroke, and Anja Crawford was fourth in the 200 backstroke.

■ UNLV BASEBALL — The Rebels split a doubleheader with Central Michigan, losing the opener 9-7 and winning the second game, 7-2. Richie Jimenez went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs in the win for UNLV (6-1).

■ UNLV MEN’S GOLF — At Palm Desert, Calif., UNLV shot 9-over 297 in the first round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate to stand second behind Texas A&M (294) in the 20-team tournament.

Kevin Penner shot 2-under 70 to lead the Rebels, good for second place behind New Mexico’s Tom Carlson (69).

■ UNLV TRACK AND FIELD — At Albuquerque, N.M., UNLV finished seventh at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships.

Brigham Young won the title with 181.50 points. UNLV scored 39 points.

On the final day, Emily Blok finished fourth in the 60-meter dash and fifth in the 200, and she helped the 4×400 relay team take fifth. Ashley Henry was fourth in the high jump, and Kelsey Williamson took eighth in the 400.

■ UNLV SOFTBALL — At Riverside, Calif., UNLV’s game against UC Riverside was rained out. The Rebels wrap up play in the Amy S. Harrison Classic today at 12:30 p.m. against Cal State Northridge.

■ CSN BASEBALL — The College of Southern Nevada beat Pacifica (Calif.) College 14-2 at Morse Stadium. Bobby Shiroky went 4-for-4 with a home run, a triple, two singles and four RBIs for the Coyotes (11-5).

■ CSN SOFTBALL — No. 3 Salt Lake Community College swept CSN 13-4 and 16-4 at the Russell Road Recreation Complex. The Coyotes fell to 10-16 overall, 3-9 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.
