UNLV men’s tennis win streak halted by San Diego State

The UNLV men’s tennis team had its eight-match winning streak snapped in a 4-3 loss to San Diego State on Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

UNLV took two of three doubles matches to go up 1-0, then went up 3-0 with a wins from Ace Matias at No. 1 singles and Gilad Berman at No. 3 singles.

But the Aztecs won the other four singles matches — including three that went three sets — to squeak out the Mountain West victory and end a long run for the Rebels (13-5, 1-1 MW), who were 12-0 at home.

■ WOMEN’S GOLF — UNLV shot 14-over 302 to stand second after the first round of The Farms Invitational in San Diego. Southern California led the 15-team field at 10-over 298, with Texas and Pepperdine tied for third at 303.

The Rebels didn’t have any players higher than eighth place individually, but the four scores that counted were all in the top 25. Mayko Chwen Wang was tied for eighth at 2-over 74, and Charlotte Brooks was one stroke back in a tie for 13th.

Dana Finkelstein (76) was tied for 19th and Demi Mak (77) was tied for 25th. Northwestern’s Hana Lee led at 2-under 70.
