Rebels healthy overall despite recent injuries

UNLV junior quarterback Mike Clausen did not practice today, still recovering from an injury he sustained Monday.

Coach Bobby Hauck did not disclose the injury, but said it wasn’t serious.

Senior defensive tackle Malo Taumua was injured late in practice, appearing to hurt an ankle. But he seemed fine walking around after practice.

Overall, it’s been a pretty healthy spring for the Rebels, who have not suffered major injuries to front-line players. Only two practices remain, including Saturday’s spring scrimmage, so Hauck and his staff probably don’t want to start celebrating yet.

The Rebels had planned to go without pads Thursday, but now will dress in full uniform after deciding to practice in shorts today.

“In back-to-back days, we decided it would be more productive," Hauck said of the change.

Tailbacks Bradley Randle and Channing Trotter each made nice catch-and-runs. Randle is a redshirt freshman; Trotter is a senior. They have waged a competitive battle for the starting job.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Caleb Herring completed a tough across-the-field pass to freshman wide receiver Marcus Sullivan.

Junior cornerback Will Chandler made an impressive open-field tackle on junior wide receiver Michael Johnson.

UNLV practices at 4 p.m. Thursday at Rebel Park, and then has its spring scrimmage at noon Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium. Both are open to the public.
