The UNLV men’s basketball team will kick off the 2015-16 season with Runnin’ Rebel Madness, a new event that will take place Oct. 22 at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center next to The D.
The free midnight madness-type showcase, which will take place from 7 to 9 p.m., will feature video introductions of each Rebels player, a dunk contest and autograph and photo sessions with fans.
UNLV’s Thomas & Mack Center basketball court (Tarkanian Court) will be moved to the downtown venue for the event, which was previously known as The Runnin’ Rebel Experience and The Runnin’ Rebel Showcase.
The UNLV women’s basketball team also will be introduced and the Rebel Girls and UNLV cheerleaders will perform. Other entertainment has yet to be announced.
“We are really looking forward to this new event in Downtown Las Vegas,” Rebels coach Dave Rice said. “It will be a fun, exciting night and also a unique opportunity for the community to meet our team and for our guys to interact with our great Runnin’ Rebel fans.”
A UNLV scrimmage that will be free and open to the public is scheduled for Oct. 15 at the Thomas & Mack Center.
The Rebels lost their top two scorers but Rice, entering his fifth season as UNLV coach, landed one of the nation’s top recruiting classes, led by 7-foot Stephen Zimmerman from Bishop Gorman High School.
