It was a much better mood around UNLV this week after a great win for a team that was a big underdog and ended up beating Hawaii 40-20 on Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium.
I’m excited and happy for our players because they showed a lot of character and finally saw some results from their hard work.
We know we must get better every week, and we did that against Hawaii. Unlike the previous week, when we had opportunities to make plays, we made plays. It was a good effort by our players and our assistant coaches getting the guys ready to go.
The win makes this week’s home game against Southern Utah even bigger for our program because it gives us a chance to get to 2-2, and it will be the last time we play at home for more than a month. I hope people come out to watch us and that those fans who were there Saturday are spreading the word that watching the Rebels is a fun evening of college football.
Our marketing people are doing some things this week to make it even easier to attend a game. It’s being called “Family and Friends Night with Rebel Football,” and there is a 2-for-1 ticket special. Call 702-739-3267 to get the scoop. There will be pregame and postgame activities for kids 12 and under, and if we replicate what we did last week, it will be a fun night as we head into our first bye week.
Southern Utah is our opponent. The Thunderbirds are capable with an explosive offense. They have a good quarterback who is a transfer from Brigham Young, they’re throwing it around pretty well and scoring a lot of points.
Southern Utah went to Laramie, Wyo., last year and was throwing into the end zone to tie the score at the end of the game against Wyoming. This season they soundly beat Sacramento State the week after Sacramento State went to Corvallis and beat Oregon State. We’re going to be tested, and we better come to play like we did last week.
Hope to see you at the stadium Saturday. Don’t forget the game starts an hour earlier than usual, with kickoff at 6 p.m.
