UNLV coordinators praise progress, but questions still remain

UNLV’s first-year coordinators arrived in Ely with plenty of questions about their players. They left here Wednesday with many more answers, saying most of their top priorities were met as the Rebels returned to Las Vegas.

Rebels’ career scoring mark in reach for kicker Kohorst

Senior kicker Nolan Kohorst, whose name already is prominent in UNLV’s record book, has a chance to become the school’s all-time leading scorer. He’s just not sure he wants that recognition.

Backup running back Smith already 2-0 vs. Minnesota

Junior running back Adonis Smith has some familiarity with UNLV’s opening opponent. He played at Northwestern for two football seasons before transferring last year, and he was on Wildcats teams that went 2-0 against Big Ten Conference rival Minnesota. UNLV plays at Minnesota on Aug. 29.

Rebel boasts SEC pedigree

Safety Frank Crawford played football in the Southeastern Conference, even starting three games two years ago for Mississippi, and is determined to go out strong at UNLV.

herring full-time QB again

Caleb Herring sacrificed last season for the good of the football team by also playing wide receiver, but when given the chance in the spring to be a full-time quarterback again, he seized the opportunity.

Younger Lotulelei following brother’s lead

He has the last name and jersey number, but whether Tau Lotulelei can come close to emulating what big brother John did at UNLV is in question. The question probably won’t be answered for a while, but early indications are encouraging for the Rebels.

Coaches, staff learn to take players’ risk of concussions seriously

Tim Hauck was playing in 1997 for the Seattle Seahawks when he was blindsided during a punt return by a Denver Bronco. Shortly into the second half, he asked a fellow safety what had been happening in the game. But even if Hauck’s short-term memory was gone, no way he was going to the bench.

Experience lessens Rebels’ uncertainty as camp goes north

This is a different type of training camp for UNLV’s football team as it shifts to Ely Saturday for 12 days of practices.

Because most of the lineup is experienced and in place, the Rebels won’t spend as much time teaching and trying to decide positions.

Ex-NFL great Jerry Rice watches son, UNLV practice

Jerry Rice certainly didn’t go out of his way to bring attention to himself, but even at a secluded location at Rebel Park, someone will notice the presence of the greatest wide receiver in football history.

Boyko’s return key for Rebels

UNLV might be better for it this season, but at the time, offensive left tackle Brett Boyko’s knee injury was a painful experience in nearly every way for the Rebels.

Road woes weigh on Rebels

Bobby Hauck follows the same routine for traveling to road games at UNLV that he did at Montana.
