Victor salts Las Vegas victory

With his team working the clock late in the fourth quarter, Las Vegas High's Farrell Victor took a handoff in an effort to put the game away with one final first down.

Instead, the senior running back broke through the line and sprinted 37 yards for a touchdown.

The play was a microcosm of Victor's night, as he rushed for 213 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries Friday to lead the fourth-ranked Wildcats to a 31-10 home victory over Desert Pines.

"I just happened to break one," Victor said. "It was a great play. (The Jaguars) were a little tired. I didn't think it was going to be a touchdown, but I got a lot of great blocks."

Things didn't start so well for Las Vegas (4-0, 2-0 Northeast), as Desert Pines (0-4, 0-2) capped its 12-play, 61-yard opening drive with a 37-yard Gustavo Galvan field goal.

But the Wildcats' defense shifted into gear for the remainder of the half, and they went ahead 7-3 on Hasaan Henderson's 1-yard keeper early in the second quarter.

Jay Mattox gave Las Vegas a 10-3 halftime edge with a 24-yard field goal.

Mistakes prevented Desert Pines from getting any closer, as the Jaguars committed untimely penalties, dropped several potentially big passes and turned the ball over four times.

Midway through the third quarter, the Jaguars appeared tired.

"Desert Pines is a good football team," Las Vegas coach James Thurman said. "But they have kids who play both ways, and we really don't. I think they got a little winded."

Victor put the Wildcats in control with an 18-yard TD run late in the third, and he made the Jaguars pay for a fumble when he capped a two-play drive with a 57-yard sprint to make it 24-3 with 9:31 left to play.

Following a Desert Pines fumble late in the fourth, Las Vegas attempted to run out the clock. On a third-down play, Victor handled the ball one last time.

"We were just trying to milk the clock," Thurman said. "We're not looking to score there, but we'll take it."

Victor's TD made it 31-3, and Desert Pines added a final score on Eric Wilkes' 80-yard run with 1:33 left to play.
