Wallace, Mills fuel 51s past Rainiers

Brett Wallace belted a three-run homer and Brad Mills threw six scoreless innings to lead the 51s to a 6-2 victory over the Tacoma Rainiers in a Pacific Coast League game Monday at Tacoma, Wash.

Wallace’s homer, his PCL-leading 10th, capped the 51s’ four-run third inning.

Jesus Merchan hit a one-out single in the third and Luis Figueroa doubled. Jarrett Hoffpauir followed with a sacrifice fly that was misplayed by Tacoma center fielder Ezequiel Carrera, allowing Merchan to score and giving Las Vegas (15-17) a 1-0 lead.

After Jeremy Reed lined out, Wallace launched a drive over the right-field wall to make it 4-0. Six of his 10 homers are solo shots.

Mills (3-2, 2.63 ERA) allowed two hits, struck out two and walked four.

Garrett Olson (1-3) took the loss for Tacoma (14-15), giving up four runs (one earned) on three hits in eight innings, with two walks and six strikeouts.

The Rainiers scored in the seventh on Chris Woodward’s RBI double, ending a 16-inning scoreless streak, and the ninth on Tommy Everidge’s sacrifice fly.

Las Vegas, which won the last two games of its road trip to finish 3-5, added two runs in the ninth on sacrifice flies by Chris Aguila and Chris Lubanski.
