10 of Las Vegas’ most high-profile weddings

There’s a reason Las Vegas is the wedding capital of the world: More than 100,000 marriage licenses are issued annually, and more than 5 percent of all U.S. weddings are performed in Clark County.

With those numbers, it’s no surprise that celebrities would want to tie the knot in Sin City. Here are 10 of the most recognizable couples who have said “I do” (and after a time, “I don’t,” in some cases) in Las Vegas:

Mickey Rooney and Ava Gardner

OK, so Mickey Rooney’s Jan. 10, 1942, wedding to Ava Gardner wasn’t a shining example of a successful marriage. But are there points for trying? After divorcing Gardner after only a couple years, he went on to marry at The Little Church of the West seven more times.

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward

The movie stars got hitched on Jan. 29, 1958, at the El Rancho Hotel and Casino. The two didn’t follow in Rooney’s footsteps and remained married until Newman’s death in 2008.

Frank Sinatra and Mia Farrow

Fifty-year-old Frank Sinatra married 21-year-old Mia Farrow on July 19, 1966, at the Las Vegas home of Jack Entratter. Sinatra wanted Farrow to star in his film “The Detective” and got mad when her filming for “Rosemary’s Baby” went long, causing Farrow to fail to report to set. Sinatra’s lawyer served Farrow with divorce papers during the filming of “Rosemary’s Baby.”

Elvis Presley and Priscilla Beaulieu

In what was perhaps the most high-profile wedding in Las Vegas history, 32-year-old Elvis Presley married 21-year-old Priscilla Beaulieu at the Aladdin Hotel on May 1, 1967. The ceremony was simple and was attended by only a few family members and close friends, but the banquet afterward was an elaborate production attended by about 100 people. The marriage lasted six years.

Bruce Willis and Demi Moore

Bruce Willis and Demi Moore were married in a suite at the Golden Nugget on Nov. 21, 1987. The couple had three daughters — Rumer, Scout and Tallulah — before splitting in 2000. They’ve remained close, though, and Willis even attended Moore’s marriage to Ashton Kutcher in 2005. (Moore and Kutcher divorced in 2013.)

Jon Bon Jovi and Dorothea Hurley

Jon Bon Jovi wed his high school sweetheart, Dorothea Hurley, on April 29, 1989, at the Graceland Wedding Chapel. The cabbie who drove the couple to the chapel was the lone witness of the ceremony, which took place on the chapel’s front steps and featured the bride and groom wearing blue jeans and leather jackets. The couple are still married and have four children.

Michael Jordan and Jaunita Vanoy

Michael Jordan was 26 when he wed 30-year-old Jaunita Vanoy in the early hours of Sept. 2, 1989, at the Little White Wedding Chapel. Vanoy originally filed for divorce in 2002, but the two decided to try to work it out. The basketball legend split with Vanoy for good in 2006.

Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra

Former Chicago Bull and current Kim Jong-un pal Dennis Rodman married “Baywatch” actress Carmen Electra on Nov. 15, 1998, at A Little Chapel of the Flowers. Rodman didn’t wear a tuxedo at the wedding, maybe because he preferred the wedding dress he had worn two years earlier on tour to promote the release of his autobiography. They divorced in 1999.

Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton

In one of the most surprising celebrity matchups ever, Angelina Jolie married Billy Bob Thornton at the Little Church of the West on May 5, 2000. She had a visible “Billy Bob” tattoo on her arm and the two wore blue jeans for their ceremony. The vials of each other’s blood they were known to wear weren’t enough to keep them together, and they split in 2003.

Britney Spears and Jason Alexander

Before Kim Kardashian’s shotgun wedding, there were the 55 hours that Britney Spears spent married to her childhood friend, Jason Alexander. Spears and Alexander partied in Las Vegas over New Year’s in 2004 and decided to “do something crazy” and get married at A Little White Wedding Chapel. The next day, the couple filed annulment papers. By Jan. 5, the marriage was over.
