A perfect gift

So for Christmas what do you give U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, who is enduring his share of bruises and headaches, and inflicting some too, trying to get a big health care bill passed in the Senate?

How about a first aid kit?

One of those was in the gift bag that Reid opened from Sen. John Ensign earlier this month at their joint office holiday party in the Capitol.

Also in the bag were a jar of vitamins and a medical reference book, the Merck Manual of Medical Information ($7.99 in paperback on Amazon).

The gift exchange is a running gag at the pair’s annual party. Two years ago, Ensign gave Reid a chunk of coal, at a time when Reid was trying to kill a coal-fired power plant near Ely.

Last year, Reid gave Ensign the collected works of comedian, author and Democrat Al Franken. Franken was running for Senate from Minnesota (he eventually won), and was giving Ensign fits as then-chairman of the Republicans’ campaign committee.

At this year’s party on Dec. 3, Ensign said he thought his gift was particularly timely, according to several people who were there.

Reid laughed. "I liked my gift better," he said.
