Blue Ribbon Commission charter

Below is the formal charter of what is being called the "Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future," the study panel set up the Obama administration to come up with alternatives to burying nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain.

The four-page document, provided by the Department of Energy and filed today with Congress, sets outs the options for the 15-member commission to discuss, including "deep geologic disposal" as a possible long term destination for the nation's spent nuclear fuel.

The document does not mention Nevada or Yucca Mountain, and it is unclear whether that means the site 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas is officially off the table.

In announcing the formation of the panel in January. Energy Secretary Steven Chu and White House energy adviser Carol Browner emphasized that the Yucca Mountain was not an option that the commission will be discussing.

DOE spokeswoman Stephanie Mueller said more information about the panel will be coming out in the next few days.
