CARS program benefits smart

Less than a year after opening, the smart center Las Vegas, a full-service sales and service center for smart fortwo vehicles, is No. 1 in the country for customer service and is on track to become No. 1 in the region for sales.

The center hopes to achieve even stronger sales soon, thanks to the Car Allowance Rebate System program, a federal program designed to help consumers purchase newer, more-fuel-efficient vehicles when they trade in a less-fuel-efficient vehicle.

The guidelines and details for the CARS program have just been published, and Carolynn Towbin, chairman of Towbin Automotive, said the smart fortwo is the vehicle that best meets the intent of the program.

“The smart fortwo provides outstanding gas mileage, is environmentally responsible and qualifies for the maximum $4,500 CARS credit with eligible trade-in under the guidelines of the CARS program,” Towbin said. “With the trade-in credit, the smart fortwo is essentially the price of a scooter. This is really a great use of this federal program.”

According to Rony Mansour, general manager of smart center Las Vegas, the smart fortwo is a logical car for Las Vegans.

“Our smart fortwo customers generally fall into one of four categories,” Mansour said. “They are looking for a value-priced car that gets unbelievable gas mileage or they are simply looking for a fun second car. Others are empty-nesters who no longer need the big family car or they are fashion and trend-forward people who are simply enamored with this fun, unique and trend-setting car.

“The smart fortwo is perfect for our Las Vegas customers with a starting price of just $11,990. It gets great gas mileage — in fact, many customers claim more than 50 miles per gallon on the freeway. It fits two comfortably, has a five-star crash testing, is manufactured by Mercedes(-Benz) and gets noticed wherever it goes.”

In 2009, the eco-friendly smart fortwo was named the most fuel-efficient all-gas-powered vehicle on sale in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Energy Web site From start to finish, nothing goes to waste on the 41-mpg smart fortwo. Only water-soluble paints are used in its production and the body panels are fully recyclable. From development and production of the vehicle to its operational period and eventual recycling, the smart car is 95 percent recyclable.
