Cochran to lead state homebuilders group

Lee “Rocky” Cochran, vice president of construction operations at Pardee Homes, has been named 2014 president of the Nevada Home Builders Association, an affiliate of the National Association of Home Builders.

A third-generation homebuilder, Cochran just completed his term as the 2013 president of the Southern Nevada Home Builders Association. During his presidency he oversaw a 20 percent increase in membership, opened new headquarters, updated technology and adopted the local HomeAid chapter that serves the temporarily homeless.

On the statewide level, Cochran plans to focus on issues critical to the homebuilding industry, including Chapter 40 reform. The law, which was originally intended to allow homeowners to receive prompt repair of real defects, has harmed homeowners and construction industry workers, Cochran said.

“As it is now written, Chapter 40 delays repairs and can lead to an exceptionally expensive, multiyear litigation process that often leaves homeowners with little money recovered and a devalued home with a clouded title,” Cochran said. “Some legal firms are making millions of dollars at the expense of homeowners and homebuilders.”

Cochran, who joined SNHBA in 1988, has served as chairman of the association’s Legislative Committee and Community Planning and Infrastructure Committee. In 2011, the association named him Builder Member of the Year for his outstanding service and involvement.

He was named the national Home Builder Safety Professional of the Year by NAHB in 2009. In 2000, Cochran earned the prestigious industry designation of Certified Graduate Builder from the NAHB.

Pardee’s parent company, Weyerhaeuser, has honored Cochran with the President’s Award for his involvement in the construction of Pardee’s Ultimate Family Home, a demonstration home at the 2004 International Builders Show in Las Vegas; for his work as a key member of the team responsible for the successful 50-Hour House project in Eldorado (the home was built in less than 50 hours to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Pardee Homes in Nevada); and for directing the million-dollar renovation at St. Jude’s Ranch for Children in 2007.
