Danny Tarkanian says he will remain silent at a political event tonight in Summerlin in light of an election complaint that Democrats filed with the Federal Election Commission today.
Tarkanian was scheduled to speak on behalf of Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle at a candidate forum in Summerlin where prominent Republican Sig Rogich is to pitch for Democrat Sen. Harry Reid.
But Nevada Democrats filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission today charging Tarkanian’s recent public activities in support of Angle amounted to a violation of campaign law.
Democrats pointed out Tarkanian is associated with a separate anti-Reid organization called Harry Reid Votes, which is not allowed to coordinate activities with the candidate or provide in-kind contributions of more than $5,000.
Tarkanian said he had not seen the complaint and called it baseless based on what was read to him.
Nonetheless, "to be on the conservative side I will make sure I do not speak at this event until we get a clarification from the FEC as to what is permissible. I am not going to speak on (Angle’s) behalf tonight."
"I believe this is a desperate effort by the Reid campaign to divert attention from his failed policies and to et another day or two of media attention away from his failed policies," Tarkanian said.
Phoebe Sweet, a spokeswoman for the Nevada Democratic Party, said the filing of the complaint was not timed in order to get Tarkanian off the program, to take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Desert Vista Community Center on Sun City Boulevard in Summerlin.
