Ding, dong … Yucca is dead

That should be the headline on the story a few minutes ago in which the AP reports that Energy Secretary Steven Chu told lawmakers that the Yucca site is no longer an option for storing highly radioactive nuclear waste.

The federal government will proceed with an application before the NRC but only because to yank the permit application might trigger lawsuits from the nuclear industry.

This means the state of Nevada can save some money by shutting down it's anit-Yucca Mountain agency, turn whatever clean-up work there is left to do to the AG, and call this long nightmare over.

Yucca is dead. Give Sen. Harry Reid, Sen. John Ensign, Gov. Gibbons and all past governors and senators credit.
