Dining pick of the week: Tasty Island

PICK OF THE WEEK:

TASTY ISLAND

6820 W. Flamingo Road at Rainbow Boulevard, 222-0002

The island of Jamaica has much to offer besides reggae music. The wonderful taste of jerk is a style of cooking native to Jamaica, where meats are dry-rubbed or wet-marinated with a very hot spice mixture. The mixture is principally allspice and Scotch bonnet peppers (among the hottest on the Scoville scale) along with cloves, cinnamon, scallions, nutmeg, thyme, garlic, salt and pepper. That's why this place is called Tasty Island. Enjoy dishes such as jerk chicken, beef short ribs, salt fish, oxtail, curry shrimp, brown stew fish, tripe and beans, liver and onions, curry goat, pepper steak and jerk wings. All entrees are served with choice of rice, steamed veggies and a slice of plantain. Among the sides are fried dumplings, rice and peas, beef or chicken patties, and callaloo, a popular Caribbean dish served in different variants with the main ingredient being a leaf vegetable. Several sub sandwiches are the Tasty Island (ham, bologna, salami, pepperoni), club, Italian combo, ham and cheese, jerk chicken, cheese mix, veggie, and turkey. Don't leave without a slice of Jamaican rum cake. Sandwiches begin at $4.39 and entrees at $8.75. Tasty Island is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. -- Jack Bulavsky
