Feminists are trying to take back ‘sexist’ #HowToSpotAFeminist
Conservative radio show host Doc Thompson started a Twitter battle Sunday evening with “#HowToSpotAFeminist” from his show “The Morning Blaze,” which quickly turned into a national hashtag making what many are calling sexist jokes surrounding feminist stereotypes.
Once actual feminists saw the tag and the things being said, they aimed to take it back and make it positive. By Tuesday evening, the hashtag had more than 25,000 tweets associated with it.
Some opted to highlight the definition of feminism for those who were unaware, and others fired back at the stereotypes being perpetuated.
One of the most common tweets being sent out echos a message used when the definition of feminism comes into question, saying, “Look in the mirror. Do you believe in equality for all people? If yes, congratulations! You have spotted a feminist.”
The United Nations sent a tweet (since retweeted almost 700 times) quoting actress and UN Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watson, “If you stand for equality, then you’re a feminist.”
Tweets attacking the stereotypes revolved around the difference between feminism and misandry.
The tweets featured on Doc Thompson’s own Twitter feed include “she’s the one who votes with her lady parts because she has no lady smarts,” from Brittany Pounders.
Another, tweeted by Doc Thompston, said, “Female celebrity earning more than most ppl b——ing that women don’t earn enough.” He mentioned the United Nations and UN Women in the tweet.
Just as a reminder, women aren’t earning as much as men nationwide.
Many writing about the tag’s success have been tongue-in-cheek, mocking the very idea of attacking someone for being a feminist. “It can be really perplexing to see a woman — maybe even an attractive woman — do things like go to work and earn her own money,” Salon wrote. “It can be doubly confusing when she does the same job as her male counterparts, just as competently, and then demands she be paid the same, because she’s a feminist, dammit.”
Many of the tweets and replies to the radio station were inappropriate or malicious.
