ELY — Tidbits from UNLV’s football practice today:
— Junior quarterback Mike Clausen took first-team snaps for the second day in a row, but don’t read too much into that. He missed some to an ankle injury last week, and this was a way to catch him. Coach Bobby Hauck really does want to make the quarterback battle fair, but senior Omar Clayton still appears to have the edge.
— Freshman cornerback Sidney Hodge not only will play this season, but he might start. He made an interception, broke up a pass, and assisted on stuffing a run at the goal line. Hodge is in a three-man rotation for the two cornerback spots.
— Junior tailback C.J. Cox missed another day of practice, giving a big edge to redshirt freshman Bradley Randle and senior Channing Trotter, who shared carries. Freshman Tim Cornett also continues to play well, and he could be a big part of the offense.
— Senior defensive tackle Isaako Aaitui is showing he means more to the team than just his considerable ability. He works with teammates after practice, and today he went all the way to the 10-yard line to stand on the sideline and cheered his teammates during goal-line drills.
— UNLV players are realizing that practices are quite different under Hauck. They are intense and fast. Two fights broke out today, and there often is an us-versus-them mentality between the offense and defense.
