Here comes the sun

Seven years ago, Layton, Utah residents Dean and Jayne Higginson decided they’d “had enough of dealing with snow” and purchased a vacation condominium in the more favorable climate of Mesquite. Over the years, they spent a considerable amount of time there during the winter months and enjoyed the climate and the small-town ambience of the community.

Upon deciding to make Mesquite their permanent residence, the couple wanted to find a larger floor plan and, about two years ago, began seriously looking at new homes throughout the Virgin Valley area, as well as Southern Utah. Ultimately, they said they found the home and lifestyle that suited their needs at Del Webb’s Sun City Mesquite.

Located about 80 miles north of Las Vegas, the age-qualified community offers a selection of 14 single-story home designs. They range from 1,200 to 3,100 square feet with two- or three-car garages. Prices start in the low $180,000s.

“We were impressed from the first time we drove into Sun City Mesquite,” Jayne Higginson said. “The open space areas were beautifully landscaped and the value for the money was the best we could find, considering the high quality of the homes and the vast community amenities.

“We enjoy the lifestyle very much, taking advantage of the community recreation center, attending the various events held here and participating in many social activities. There is always something going on for residents here.”

Residents of Sun City Mesquite have private access to a 30,000-square-foot Community Recreation Center. Inside, it features a large, climate-controlled swimming pool, which can be used for activities such as lap swimming and water aerobics classes. Other indoor features include a heated spa, a two-story fitness center with an upper-level walking track, kitchen, central hall, lounge with a plasma screen television, computer kiosks and rooms designated for classes, hobbies and clubs.

A highlight of the outdoor area is an 18-hole putting course. Other outdoor features include walking trails, resort-style pool surrounded by lounge chairs and shaded areas, two heated spas, and tennis, bocce and pickle ball courts.

The Higginsons chose the Marigold design at Sun City Mesquite. The home features 2,092 square feet with two bedrooms, two full baths, den, great room, breakfast nook, covered patio and an attached, two-car garage.

“We love the openness of the Marigold plan,” Higginson said.

“It has a spacious kitchen and a good-sized great room, which works great for day-to-day living as well as entertaining. The second bedroom offers the extra space we need when our children and grandchildren visit and it is on the opposite side of the home from our master suite, which provides enhanced privacy for everyone. It’s a home that works very well for us.”

Mesquite is known for its mild weather and scenic natural topography.
