A mushroom cloud expands above the desert north of Las Vegas in November 1951 as an atomic bomb test is conducted. The detonation of the device was one of the first above-ground nuclear detonations set off at the Atomic Energy Commission's Nevada Test Site located less than 100 mile N.W. of Las Vegas, Nevada. The image was shot over the rooftops of downtown casinos and won Life Magazine's "Picture of the Week" honors for Las Vegas News Bureau photographer Don English. (Don English/Las Vegas News Bureau)
If Nevada is known for anything beyond Las Vegas and Reno, it’s atomic testing.
The Nevada Test Site, now known as the Nevada National Security Site, is an area northwest of Las Vegas that was once home to hundreds of atomic blasts in the 1950s and ’60s.
While some remember the culture that developed around it fondly, many others remember testing in Nevada for what is symbolised at the time and for the damage it caused.
