Man in custody after another shot, killed over spilled beer

Police have a suspect in custody after a man was fatally shot over a spilled beer in Sauget, Ill., Saturday morning.

According to police, Lamarc Robert Garrett, 29, of St. Louis was taken into custody for his alleged involvement in the death of Oscar C. Casiano, 26, of the 2800 block of California.

Three men were getting beer and gas at a Phillips 66 gas station around 5:30 a.m. when a man approached them asking for a beer, police said.

An argument occurred and the beer fell to the ground, spraying the suspect, authorities said. Police said the suspect got angry, walked back to his car, returned and fatally shot Casiano. The other two victims were not struck by the gunfire.

The alleged gunman’s picture was captured on security cameras, police said. The suspect was seen leaving the scene in a dark blue Ford Fusion.

Police Chief Patrick Delaney said at least 19 detectives are currently working on the case.

“You talk about a senseless killing,” Delaney said. “The victim wasn’t the one who dropped the beer. You can only assume he was upset that they wouldn’t give him a beer or that it was over the spilled beer on his shoes.”

Garrett has been charged with first-degree murder and is currently being held on a $1 million bond. He is currently being held in Missouri and is awaiting extradition.
