Obama over-thought Foley rescue

Before too much time goes by and world events allow the beheading of American journalist James Foley to slip into yesterday’s news, it’s important to underline what Pentagon sources are saying about the botched rescue attempt.

You will remember that Foley was beheaded by ISIS and a video was sent to the world. It once again reminded everyone how brutal ISIS is. The British prime minister immediately came home from vacation to hunt down the culprit. President Obama stayed on vacation at Martha’s Vineyard, managing only to address the press briefly on Foley before heading to the golf course where he was photographed 10 minutes later decked out in golf shorts, yucking it up with buddies.

In the aftermath of this bizarre display of “I-don’t-give-a-sh*t” by President Obama, the White House revealed that the president really did care about Foley and, in fact, the president tried to rescue Mr. Foley, but he (ala Maxwell Smart) “missed him by that much.”

But here’s what really happened:

“Pentagon sources said Foley and the others might well have been rescued but Obama, concerned about the ramifications of US troops being killed or captured in Syria, took too long to authorise the mission.

“Anthony Shaffer, a former lieutenant-colonel in US military intelligence who worked on covert operations, said: ‘I’m told it was almost a 30-day delay from when they said they wanted to go to when he finally gave the green light. They were ready to go in June to grab the guy [Foley] and they weren’t permitted.’

“Another US defence source said: ‘The White House constantly goes back and forth on these things. These people are a bunch of academics who endlessly analsze stuff and ordering up another deep-thinking paper but can’t decide what to order for lunch.’”

This is your president at work. Or, more often than not, on vacation.
