Some scenes of Lake Mead have changed over the years — PHOTOS

Sand. Sun. Maybe a beer from the ice chest. Some things haven't changed for visitors to Lake Mead National Recreational Area over the decades. (Well, the outfits definitely have.)

Despite lowering water levels and the ongoing drought, millions flock to Lake Mead and the surrounding area — just a short drive from the Las Vegas Valley — every year. Water levels at the lake took a dive in the mid-1950s and mid-1960s, according to data from NASA, and there was a less dramatic dip in the early 1990s before water fell to the levels we see today with the infamous "bathtub ring."

Check out what the lake (and the people going to it) has looked like over the decades in the photo gallery above.
