Las Vegas resident John McKibbin became the first person in Nevada to purchase a 2012 Hyundai Veloster and you can bet that he will be one of the many car enthusiasts capitalizing on one of America’s newest sports cars.
The 19-year-old McKibbin, a graduate of Palo Verde High School, had been looking for a Ford Mustang when his mother encouraged him to take a look at the line of vehicles at Planet Hyundai Centennial in the northwest valley.
“I walked onto the lot and saw the Veloster,” said the enthusiastic McKibbin. “All I could think was that it was the perfect car for me. It had every option and it looked so cool. The Veloster has three doors including a hatchback and four seats. I fell in love with it instantly.”
Powered by a 138-horsepower, four-cylinder engine that delivers as much as 40 miles per gallon, the Veloster has plenty of power and a suspension package that McKibbin found to be the ideal combination. The vehicle’s Active ECO System is engineered for the environment and includes extensive computer modeling and power train performance mapping used to modify engine and transmission control while also boosting fuel mileage.
“The Veloster engine has a lot of kick to it and that was very surprising to me. Better yet, the car gets excellent gas mileage and, in fact, I was getting 49 miles to the gallon with it one day.”
The six-speed EcoSHIFT Dual Clutch Transmission steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters incorporate the latest technology while also delivering smooth and efficient power.
“The car handles great,” McKibbin said. “In the rain, it was perfect and very responsive. I had a car with a four-cylinder engine before and I really didn’t want another one before I took the Veloster for a test drive.
“The interior is red leather with racing seats and it’s really nice. The car also has this really great dashboard that has a very cool look to it. I have navigation and a 7-inch touch screen along with Bluetooth, a backup camera and the rest. I even had a guy driving a Porsche pull up next to me the other day asking about my car.”
The Veloster has modified the front suspension featuring gas-charged hydraulic shock absorbers for a sporty ride while the Motor Driven Power Steering has been tuned for increased steering response. Large front and rear stabilizer bars reduce body roll and improve handling and control on the curves.
“We’re taking the Veloster to Magic Mountain and I can’t wait,” said McKibbin.
Planet Hyundai Centennial sales consultant Steve Falk said the Veloster is going to quickly become one of the favorite Hyundai models.
“For a certain niche of people, it’s a very attractive vehicle,” said Falk. “The car fits all walks of life ranging from a teenager to housewife. I really think that you’ll eventually see everyone from attorneys to doctors and professional athletes driving the Veloster.”
Yet another key selling point is that every Hyundai comes with a 10-year, 100,000-mile power train warranty.
“I feel very comfortable with my Veloster,” said McKibbin. “It has everything that I could want with a new car.”
