The roots of the sovereign citizen movement exposed

The arrest this week of four men connected to the sovereign citizen movement
has folks clucking about whether these fellows were actually "domestic
terrorists" or just like thousands of other Nevadans who register
their political views on the far end of the Libertarian radio dial.

Obviously, the money laundering, tax evasion, and gun charges
separate them, allegedly, from those who believe strongly in the words
of the Constritution and in small government.

For one view of the sovereign movement, and its intertwinings with
the anti-tax movement made infamous by our very own Irwin Schiff (a
man the defendants appear to be connected to, at least in spirit), the
Anti-Defamation League offers its insights.

Skeptics will no doubt note the proximity of the arrest to tax
season. With April 15 fast-approaching, this arrest ought to be enough
to scare some folks who were perhaps clinging to the dizzy promises of
the anti-tax crowd that there’s no legal grounds for the government to
compel tax collection.

That tall tale has sent more than one Southern Nevadan not only to
the poor house, but to the Big House as well.
