Toddler dies after foster mom said she used butter knife to clear her airway

Henry County, GA — Henry County Department of Family and Children Services has released a 10-page report detailing the moments before 2-year-old Laila Marie Daniel died in the custody of her foster parents.

In the report, Jennifer Rosenbaum told the case manager that Laila began chocking on a piece of chicken. Rosenbaum stated she tried to clear her airway, first with her fingers, but when that did not work she used a butter knife.

Rosenbaum can be heard in a 911 call being coached on how to perform CPR.

According to the report, Daniel entered foster care in April. Her parents were incarcerated, and her mother was a childhood friend of Rosenbaum's.

An autopsy was completed and preliminary findings suggested Laila's death was due to abuse. The report states that the autopsy did not reveal the child choked.

Jennifer Rosenbaum was released from jail Wednesday on a $100,000 bond.

Two caseworkers have been separated from the agency over this case.
