Transgender woman found murdered in Florida park
July 22, 2015 - 4:00 pm
Authorities in Florida are investigating the murder of a transgender woman who was found in a Tampa park.
India Clarke, 25, died after suffering blunt force trauma to the upper body, Buzzfeed reported. Police found Clarke's body in a park near the University Area Community Center on Tuesday morning.
Clarke's mother described India as "a good-hearted person" to local media. Police said Clarke had a "history of prostitution," but didn't say if it played a role in her death.
Clarke was described as a male by police and a medical examiner, but Clarke is described as female on her Facebook profile and by friends.
“India Clarke’s death is a tragedy that is made worse by egregious misgendering by local police and media,” anti-violence group NCAVP said on Wednesday.
Clarke's death is the ninth confirmed murder of a transgender person of color in 2015.
