Fire displaces 1, is blamed on AC unit

One person was displaced early Tuesday morning after a fire at a central valley apartment complex.
The fire was called in about 3:30 a.m. at the Lantana Apartments at 1200 S. Torrey Pines Drive, near Charleston Boulevard.
The fire started with an air conditioning unit on the roof of a building in the complex. The fire didn’t extend to the inside of the building, but one of the apartments was damaged by smoke and water.
No injuries were reported, and the fire was out within about 30 minutes.

Police responded to the area after receiving reports that the woman was armed with a shovel. Police said the woman chased neighbors and a security guard. Wills got between Richards and the others and repeatedly told her to drop the shovel. The woman instead turned and moved toward a person who was standing nearby before the officer fired shots. Police said she bit another officer as he attempted to render aid. Richards remains in serious but stable condition.

The suspects, one of who was armed, next demanded money and property from a pair of 18-year-olds at Fashion Show mall. The suspects were later spotted at the SLS Las Vegas parking garage. They tried to get away by ramming a patrol car with their vehicle. That effort failed and they were taken into custody.
