Allegiant Travel to trim number of Honolulu flight attendants
Allegiant Travel will reduce the number of flight attendants permanently stationed in Honolulu from 37 to 20 as a result of a thinner schedule than once planned.
An Allegiant spokeswoman characterized the move as repositioning people where passenger demand and work time is greater. All though the flight attendants are classified as full time, that does not guarantee 40 hours a week unlike jobs with regular hours; they are paid based on how much they fly.
The Transport Workers Union, struggling to reach a first contract with management on behalf of flight attendants, called the move a layoff. However, the union acknowledged in a statement that the flight attendants were allowed a $3,000 moving allowance by the company to other crew bases, “a sum likely to cover only a portion of the relocation to the mainland.”
In April, Allegiant decided to drop seven of its 10 Hawaiian routes due to subpar sales. But the company plans to add back two in September and announce a new city next week.
