Company given one year for Casa de Shenandoah project
The Clark County Commission on Wednesday gave CSD LLC another year to finish the work of renovating Wayne Newton’s estate, although the project’s future is up in the air.
The commission shortened the time from the two years recommended by county staff because of litigation surrounding the project and the possibility that it would include more than memorabilia and exhibits tied to Newton’s career as a Strip headliner. For example, CSD, 70 percent owned by Texas businessman Lacy Harber, has a trademark for a Fabulous Las Vegas Museum that would encompass more of the city’s entertainment history.
In a U.S. Bankruptcy Court hearing last week, CSD chief restructuring officer Grant Lyon testified that he thought Harber still was uncertain what he would do with Casa de Shenandoah, Newton’s longtime 40-acre estate. On Monday, CSD received court permission to retain a broker to sell it and 13 acres across Sunset Road.
Two years ago, neighbors had fought the plan to create a Graceland in the desert as a commercial intrusion into a residential area. On Wednesday, some advocated the Newton-only restriction for the property.
