Sale of Western Cab Co. to Yellow Checker Star off table

A proposed deal that would have created the largest taxi company in Las Vegas was taken off the table for unspecified reasons.

Western Cab Co. had placed an item on Tuesday’s Nevada Taxicab Authority agenda, seeking approval of its proposed sale to Yellow Checker Star Transportation. The terms were not disclosed.

However, a Western attorney pulled the item four days before it was scheduled to be heard. At the meeting, Marilyn Moran, a member of the family that owns Western, said the two sides could not agree on terms, but she did not identify the sticking points.

Western has 158 medallions, permits that allow it to put that many cabs on the streets. Combining it with the 603 medallions held by Yellow Checker Star would have created a company with 761 medallions, or 51 more than the current largest cab company, Frias Transportation Management.

Western was incorporated in 1950 and taken over in 1965 by the late Herb Tobman, Moran’s father.
