Starting Saturday, you can tap out all 10 digits for phone numbers

Starting Saturday, phone users will be able to tap out 10-digit phone numbers in Southern Nevada. This “permissive dialing” period aims to accustom residents to the practice, which will become mandatory in 2014 when Southern Nevada introduces the new 725 area code.

From Aug. 3 to May 3, the practice will be voluntary. After May 3, dialing the area code will be required to make a call. New 725 phone numbers will be assigned starting June 3.

In 2012, the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada approved a second area code for the region. Calls to 911 and 411 will remain unchanged after the new area code is introduced.
