TruFusion turns typical gym on its head

Just like almost any fitness club, TruFusion has a food and beverage bar and a reception desk but don’t expect to see long rows of treadmills, StairMasters, ellipticals and stationary bicycles in the workout rooms.

Customers at the 8575 S. Eastern Ave. business can instead expect a spa-like setting where classes feature a mix — or fusion — of unconventional exercises. For one, the TruCircuit class incorporates suspension training, in which participants work out on suspended straps; bodyweight drills, which entail strength training using one’s weight as resistance; kettlebells; and battleropes, which are about as thick as soda cans and are available in various weights.

“It incorporates routine body movement that we use every day,” said Josh Walker, director of marketing for the franchise.

Taking a class at TruFusion oftentimes gives new meaning to the phrase “working up a sweat.” Rooms are heated for many of the sessions, including during Tru Hot Pilates, Hot Power Flow Yoga and Tru Hot Barre.

A children’s aerobics class also is available, as are unheated yin classes, geared toward relaxation and stretching to enhance range of motion and energy flow.

“It’s very restorative, is what it is,” said Jonathan Fornaci, corporate president of the franchise.

Customer Dody Furst routinely attends the yin sessions, she said.

“I come here regularly to maintain my own health,” the Sun City MacDonald resident said. “I’m over 70, and I just want to keep my flexibility.”

Lockers at TruFusion are free. Customers also can purchase workout apparel there or related merchandise, such as yoga mats.

In another unconventional amenity, the business plans to install a cryofreeze unit next month aimed at cooling the body to alleviate soreness and restore cortisone levels following workouts, Fornaci said.

The unit also helps burn calories as the body strives to adapt while the temperature tumbles into the low 50s, he said.

“Your body is trying to survive, so it burns calories,” he said.

The 10,000-square-foot Henderson location is the franchise’s first in the valley, said Mike Borden, majority owner. A 15,000-square-foot location in Downtown Summerlin is scheduled to open by Jan. 1, Walker said. Locations also are planned in Southern Highlands and northwest Las Vegas, along with an additional one in Henderson, Borden added.

“So we’ll have five in Vegas,” he said.

The Henderson site, which opened about two years ago, has roughly 2,700 members and offers about 20 classes a day, Walker said.

“Daily, we’ll see anywhere between 700 and 900 people through the door,” he said.

Membership costs $69 a month, with students paying $49.

TruFusion is generally open from 6 a.m. to midnight daily, depending on when classes begin in the morning and end in the evening on any given day.
