Gardening in cooler weather focus of free class Oct. 2

Clark County Cooperative Extension master gardener Helen Brown will present a fall gardening class Oct. 2 at the Family Resource Center at University Medical Center, 1120 Shadow Lane.

The cooler-weather gardening class begins at 10 a.m. It is free and open to the public.

Cooler weather is the best season to grow vegetables. In Las Vegas, cool weather gardening can begin as early as late August and end as late as the end of May depending on the weather. Root vegetables, such as carrots, turnips, beets and radishes, do well in cooler weather. With less sun, these plants thrive and they also are free of most insects. Less water is needed and you can use more creative types of containers.

Reservations are requested and can be made by calling Amy Runge at the Family Resource Center, 702-383-2229. For general gardening questions contact the master gardener help line at 702-257-5555.
