Nominations sought for Nevada Senior Citizen of the Year award

Nominees are now being sought for the Nevada Senior Citizen of the Year award.

The Nevada Delegation of the National Silver Haired Congress and the Aging Services Directors Organization created the award in 2013 to honor “significant contributions made at the local, state and/or local level and by excellence achieved through going above and beyond the call of duty, specifically with respect to volunteer work in support” of Nevada’s senior citizens.

According to the organization, nominees are evaluated on the basis of “the scope and impact” of their achievements and the extent to which their work offers “inspiration to their community and other senior citizens.”

Honored as 2014 Nevada Senior Citizen of the Year was Raymonde Fiol, 77, of Las Vegas. Nominators cited Fiol, a Holocaust survivor, for making it her life’s mission “to preserve the memory of the Holocaust and to make sure Holocaust survivors in our community and around the United States are provided with the services they need.”

The award competition is open to persons 60 and older who have lived in Nevada for at least five years. Nominations will be accepted until March 31, and the award will be presented in May.
