Swing Away
I don’t do much golfing any more, but here’s a tournament I might just enter. It has all the ingredients that make golfing worthwhile — gorgeous setting, open bar, a chance to win $1 million if I shoot a hole-in-one and plenty of beautiful women. No, I’m not dreaming. I’m talking about Scores Las Vegas’ third annual tournament, this Friday, April 18, at Bali Hai Golf Club.
For those of you who don’t know, Scores is one of our town’s best gentlemen’s club. That explains the presence of the beautiful women — dancers from the club. The day’s festivities include a live entertainer "caddy" auction, entertainment in the 14th Hole Red Bull Lounge featuring an open bar with food, DJ’s on two different holes and the possibility of picking up a cool mil if you drop a hole-in-one.
Registration begins at 11:30 a.m with the live caddy auction at noon. The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. A foursome for the tournament starts at $1,500 and includes green fee, shared golf cart fee, complimentary drinks and food in the Red Bull Lounge and gift bag including Scores Las Vegas hat, shirt, towel and golf balls.
FANS CLAMOR FOR CHER
Celine who? A lot of people were sad to see Celine Dion exit Caesars Palace and wondered how her replacements — Bette Midler and Cher — would fare. Midler wowed the audiences from Day One and there has been such a demand for tickets to see Cher that Caesars Palace has announced it is releasing 18 additional shows scheduled for September and October. Tickets for these shows are now on sale, so don’t wait to snap them up.
Cher obviously knew what she was talking about when she said, "Las Vegas and I are a very good fit. Las Vegas is way over the top, and the show that I do is way over the top. I feel that it just has to be. I guess you could go on in a black dress and sing, but oh, I would just want to slit my wrist." And so would we.
The 90-minute show will be presented four nights a week at 7:30 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays (dark Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays). Tickets from Sept. 2 through Oct. 5 can be purchased by calling 1-866-510-CHER (2437) or online at www.ticketmaster.com, keyword "Cher." Tickets may be purchased in person at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace Box Office open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. For groups of 20 or more, call 702-731-7208. Ticket prices are $95, $140, $175 and $250.
LATIN CONNECTION
If you like jazz, you won’t want to miss Nevada Jazz Orchestra performing its annual Latin Connection concert. This year’s performance is at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 20, at the Winchester Cultural Center Theater, 3130 S. McLeod Dr. Bandleader Barry Ross has written two new Latin compositions for the concert including "Salsa Jazz" and "Bolero," which features alto saxophonist Fred Haller. Besides original compositions, Ross has created new Latin arrangements including pianist Eddie Palmieri’s "Paginas de Mujer." For Dizzy Gillespie’s speedy "Bebop," Ross supplied a Latin rhythm and harmonized the blazing solo recorded by legendary alto saxophonist Charlie Parker in the 1940s for the entire saxophone section. The orchestra will play Ross’ arrangement of "Bésame Mucho," one of the tunes from the CD, "¡Como No!"
Nearly every member of the orchestra is a soloist, performing at the master level. To get tickets, call the Center at 702-455-7340. For more information, you can visit www.accessclarkcounty.com. Tickets are $20 for general admission, $15 for students and seniors and $10 for Jazz Society members.
