Thousands walk new Hoover Dam Bypass bridge

Thousands of people Saturday took advantage of a rare opportunity to stroll across the new Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, which is not yet open for vehicle traffic.
Called Bridging America, the one-day event was part of a series of celebrations marking completion of the 3.5-mile Highway 93 Hoover Dam Bypass and its signature $240 million span over Black Canyon. The dam and the bridge 1,500 feet down-river are seen here in a rare view from a helicopter hovering a few hundred feet above the Nevada side. Even after traffic starts to flow pedestrians will be able to use a walkway on the bridge’s north side during daylight hours.
