1 dead after hit-and-run crash involving semi north of Las Vegas

One person is dead after a hit-and-run crash Wednesday on U.S. Highway 93 near the Interstate 15 interchange north of Las Vegas, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Las Vegas police were initially called to investigate the body of a dead man just off the highway about two miles northwest of the Love’s Travel Stop.

But Metro called Nevada Highway Patrol about 7 a.m. when evidence pointed to the man being hit and killed by a semitrailer that fled the scene, Trooper Chelsea Stuenkel said.

Stuenkel said it appeared that the man was walking on the shoulder of the southbound lanes of U.S. 93 when he was hit. His body had been there since the early morning hours, she added.

The semitrailer has right front end damage and is missing a headlight housing, Stuenkel said.

U.S. 93, a two-lane highway, has been reduced to a single lane with alternating traffic while troopers investigate the crash.
