1 treated for smoke, 1 firefighter sent to UMC after house fire near South Point

One civilian was treated for smoke inhalation and one firefighter was taken to University Medical Center after a vacant house in the south valley went up in flames Friday night.

The fire started at 8:48 p.m. just east of the South Point at 9966 Giles St., and it took awhile to knock down because there were no nearby hydrants, said Clark County Deputy Fire Chief Jon Klassen.

“They had to shuttle water from a remote location,” he said. “It’s not nearly as smooth and efficient as we’d like it to be, but it works.”

The civilian was treated at a nearby hospital, and the firefighter was taken to UMC’s trauma unit with nonlife-threatening injuries, Klassen said.

There were no damage totals available as of Friday night, but Klassen said it was “extensive.” The cause is still under investigation, but the flames were centered in the attic, he said.

The civilian who was treated was near the home but not inside it.
