Clark County coroner identifies man killed in accident at Lake Mead

The man who died Sunday at Lake Mead National Recreation Area has been identified by the Clark County coroner’s office.

Javier Velazquez-Montiel, 30, of Mexico City, died from blunt-force trauma in a single-vehicle crash, the coroner’s office said Wednesday.

The National Park Service said Montiel was found unconscious by a park visitor on Northshore Road about 3 p.m. Park rangers and Nevada Highway Patrol responded and said speed was a factor in the crash. The Park Service also reported that Montiel was not wearing a seat belt.

Multiple unrelated incidents at the national park were reported the same day. There were two near-drownings and an injured hiker had to be rescued. At least 15 rescues were made on Sunday.
