County issues 1,000th marriage license to same-sex couple

Clark County issued its 1,000th marriage license to a same-sex couple Wednesday.

“Congratulations Christopher Barnson and Daryl Reed on being the 1,000th same-sex couple to receive their marriage license in our great county,” County Clerk Lynn Goya said.

The couple resides in Las Vegas and plans on getting married later this month.

The Marriage License Bureau began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples on Oct. 9, after a ruling by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. The clerk’s office issued the 100th marriage license to a same-sex couple in Clark County on Oct. 11.

Since Oct. 9, the Marriage License Bureau has issued almost 19,500 marriage licenses, including the 1,000 to same-sex couples. The bureau typically issues more than 80,000 marriage licenses each year.

“Las Vegas is the best place in the world to get married, and we welcome the LGBT community here to enjoy the wonderful things we have to offer,” Goya said.

“It makes sense that in 2015 we will now be a top destination for gay weddings too.”
