Grand jury indicts man in attack while searching for pit bulls

A 33-year-old man who attacked a woman while searching for his pit bulls has been indicted, prosecutors said Friday.

Calvin Thomas Elam faces several counts including first-degree kidnapping, sexual assault, assault with a deadly weapon, battery with intent to commit sexual assault and unlawful use of an electronic stun device.

Prosecutor Sonia Jimenez said Elam hog-tied the victim and sexually assaulted her on March 10 at a home near Jones Boulevard and Washington Avenue. A criminal complaint stated that Elam beat the woman with a leather belt and broom stick, while pointing a shotgun and stun gun at her and then sexually assaulted her with the broom stick.

District Judge Jennifer Togliatti ordered Elam held on $500,000 bail. He remains in custody at the Clark County Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in court later this month.
