Paul Herron, 46, has been booked in absentia for one count of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of assault with a deadly weapon on a protected person, police said. Herron is still recovering from gunshot wounds at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.
A father-and-son fight led to a call for help Sunday afternoon. The 72-year-old father called police when his son threatened him with two large butcher knives, police said.
Officers confronted the man on a front lawn in the 3200 block of Liahona Way, near East Harmon Avenue and South Mojave Road.
The 46-year-old man ignored officers’ instructions to put the knives down and advanced on them. The man raised the knives over his head as he approached, Metro said, and an officer fired several shots at him from about 10 feet away.
Police have said the man was agitated but not whether he had any known mental illnesses or problems with substance abuse.
The identity of the officer who shot the man will be released Tuesday, according to Metro policy.
It was the 16th officer-involved shooting in Metro’s jurisdiction this year.
