Officials mark Las Vegas-area golf course flood project work

Officials are marking the reopening of a Las Vegas Valley public golf course following a renovation that included a $150 million flood control project.

Improvements being highlighted in a Tuesday morning ceremony at The Club at Sunrise are expected to remove 1,700 neighboring from a federal flood zone.

That action, by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is expected in September.

Tuesday’s ceremony is set to include course management officials from Northbrook, Ill.-based KemperSports, and Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani, who represents the area.

The 18-hole, par-72 golf course opened in 1964 near Sahara Avenue and Nellis Boulevard as the Winterwood Golf Club.

The redesign was by golf course architect Randy Heckenkemper.

It also has a new clubhouse with a golf shop and a restaurant called The Winterwood Grille.
